Is America Still Communist?
In his correspondence with Robert Campbell O.P in 1968 (as part of the “Spectrum of Catholic Attitudes” project) McLuhan notes that Communism, in any practical sense of the word, is something that happened over 100 years ago. Marx, he asserts, “failed to notice that the world that he lived in was already communist. That is to say everyman had access to say postal services that went well beyond that any private wealth could set up or control.” McLuhan concludes his brief reflections on Communism noting that “I think communism occurs when the service environments for the ordinary person are themselves greater than those that the wealthiest person in the community can provide for himself.”
