PROBE: McLuhan on Photography, Symbolism & the Inner Trip

Photography was a challenge to writers just before it came a pervasive environmental fact. The period just before photography is the period of symbolism, and symbolism is figure minus ground. When photography arrived to fill in the ground automatically for all figures, symbolism died. Photography was succeeded by the stream of consciousness and the inner trip, whether in Freduian dream analysis or TV programming. -- H. M. McLuhan
