The last part; back of wave moves faster than front, peaks and breaks, reminds me of something a pilot friend of mine told we about flying...

How, the reason the plane fly's is because the current moves quicker under the wing than over the wing, he demonstrated it interestingly by placing a teaspoon under a flowing tap.

Water and air, quite similar but different! One doesn't break it seems.
